Analysis
The lead story in each issue presents my analysis on one of my favorite topics in spirituality.
The blissful essence of spirituality: Moving beyond religious labels
Are religious people more helpful? Does being religious equate to being spiritual? These questions prompt us to delve into the deeper meaning of spirituality and its impact on our lives. According to a 2017 research study conducted by Oxford University, it was discovered that individuals who fall into the extreme ends of spirituality and atheism share a reduced fear of death. This intriguing finding suggests that there exists a significant group of people who engage in religious practices and rituals, yet may lack complete trust in a Supreme Power. Surprisingly, this group displays a greater fear of death compared to atheists.
The true measure of spirituality
In order to understand the essence of spirituality, we must shift our focus from religious labels and rituals to the core principles that underpin a truly spiritual life. Regardless of the religious labels we identify with, such as atheists, agnostics, or followers of various faiths, it is crucial to recognize that our devotion, piety, and humanity cannot be sustained if we selectively embrace and discriminate against others based on innate attributes bestowed upon them by a higher power.
“Religion is belief in someone else's experience. Spirituality is having your own experience.” —Deepak Chopra
Beyond superficialities: Priorities on the spiritual path
What truly matters is our spiritual evolution and our contribution to the well-being of Mother Earth and its inhabitants, encompassing humans, plants, and animals. It is imperative to assess our priorities on the spiritual path, moving beyond external factors such as birthplace, appearance, education, or material possessions. True spiritual growth is measured by our impact on the lives of others and our dedication to giving back to society. It is determined by the love we demonstrate towards all creations of our Creator and our commitment to preserving the natural world. Above all, it is contingent on our ability to bridge divides and unite people, rather than sowing seeds of division.
Transcending religious boundaries: Embracing unity
In our journey towards spiritual evolution, it is essential to transcend the superficial aspects of religious practice and focus on the essence of spirituality itself. Regardless of the labels we choose to identify with, be it theists, atheists, agnostics, or followers of diverse belief systems, we cannot claim to be religious, devoted, pious, or humane if we continue to discriminate based on attributes such as birth, skin color, or religion. Let us strive for interfaith harmony and unite humanity under the umbrella of a religion-neutral Supreme Consciousness, rejecting divisions based on birth, religion, caste, race, gender, or region.
“Humanity is my religion, and kindness is my prayer.” —Dalai Lama
Spirituality with Ranjit: New dimensions of spirituality
Under the paradigm of #SpiritualitywithRanjit, spirituality takes on new dimensions. Acts that contribute to a better world by combating climate change, pollution, and global warming are regarded as more spiritual than actions that involve clearing forests or felling trees to construct places of worship. The true embodiment of spirituality lies in promoting interfaith harmony and fostering unity among the human race under the inclusive banner of a religion-neutral Supreme Consciousness. Let us transcend religious labels and work towards a collective evolution that embraces the spirit of spirituality.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the essence of spirituality lies in our ability to transcend religious boundaries and focus on the core principles that unite us as humans. It is through our actions and contributions to the world around us that we embody true spirituality. Regardless of our religious affiliations or lack thereof, let us prioritize unity, compassion, and the well-being of our shared planet. In this way, we can evolve spiritually and make a lasting impact on the world we inhabit.

Q and A
I may not be a spiritual master, but in this section, I'll do my best to address your questions based on what I've learned and my personal experiences with spirituality. Over the past three years, I've made an effort to respond to numerous inquiries I received through my interactions on social media as the founder of Spirituality with Ranjit. As a paid subscriber, you'll have access to a dedicated Google Form where you can submit your questions. I'll be sharing exclusive responses in a separate post sent directly to paid subscribers via email. In this issue, I'm featuring one of those Q&A sessions.
Ask Ranjit
Q.
“What is your concept of rebirth, hell, and heaven? Please guide us.” —Name withheld (posted on 13 July 2020)
A.
Explaining the complexity of the question you've asked would require ample time and space, but I'll do my best to provide a concise overview.
In Abrahamic religions such as Judaism, Islam, and Christianity, the concepts of heaven and hell hold significant importance. These designated places are believed to serve as realms for delivering justice and determining the eternal fate of individuals.
On the other hand, in Brahmanical religions like Hinduism, the notion of specific locations for justice is not as prominent. Instead, there are concepts such as “Vaikuntha Dham,” “Swarga Loka,” “Mrityu Loka,” and “Naraka.” According to Hindu tradition, after death, each soul is said to await its turn to cross the underworld Vaitarini river with the assistance of deities like Yama or Hades.
Buddhism, in contrast, revolves entirely around the principles of rebirth, karma, and nirvana. Buddhists do not believe in a Creator God but rather focus on the cyclical nature of existence and the pursuit of liberation from suffering.
Considering these diverse beliefs, I think it is plausible to entertain the idea of an afterlife, the existence of souls, or our origin from a divine realm of light, with the possibility of reuniting with a higher power if all goes well.
However, what truly matters is that we make our current human existence meaningful, constructive, and contributory to the realization of our Creator’s dream of making a better world. Here are three important principles that I would recommend to everyone, including myself:
Refrain from harboring hatred, even in the face of provocation.
Stay focused and avoid being swayed from our path, even when tempted by distractions.
Strive to minimize harm to the planet and its inhabitants to the best of your ability.
By embodying these ideals, we can play a role in advancing the vision of a more harmonious and compassionate world as intended by a higher power.

Reading Across Religions: Uniting Faiths Through the Power of Books

Bhagavad-gītā As It Is by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda is a renowned and authoritative edition of the Bhagavad-gītā, a classic of world literature. This book has sold over ten million hardbound copies in more than fifty languages, making it a widely cherished and respecte
d work. In this edition, Prabhupāda's translation is hailed as a perfect combination of literal accuracy and profound religious insight.
Scholars from various backgrounds have praised Bhagavad-gītā As It Is for its invaluable contribution to understanding the Gītā and devotion. Dr. Thomas J. Hopkins, an emeritus chairman of the Department of Religious Studies at Franklin and Marshall College, emphasizes its excellence in accurately portraying the Gītā while providing religious wisdom. Catholic theologian and author Thomas Merton recognizes the book as a reminder of the need for genuine metaphysical consciousness in our culture. Dr. Geddes MacGregor, an emeritus distinguished professor of Philosophy at the University of Southern California, commends Prabhupāda for his interpretive insight and meaningful presentation in the devotional tradition. Dr. Elwin H. Powell, a professor of Sociology at the State University of New York, acknowledges the transformative power of the Gītā's teachings in bringing joy and serenity to people's lives. Additionally, Dr. Francois Chenique, a Doctor of Religious Sciences, highlights the book's ability to introduce readers to the true essence of India and its eternal wisdom.
The book itself is organized into eighteen chapters covering various aspects of life, spirituality, and philosophy. It begins with an introduction to the discipleship-based succession (from Kṛṣṇa, Brahmā, Nārada to A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada), followed by observations of the armies on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. The subsequent chapters delve into topics such as karma-yoga, transcendental knowledge, devotion, and the three modes of material nature. The final chapter concludes with the perfection of renunciation.
“You have the right to perform your prescribed duty, but you are not entitled to the fruits of your actions. Never consider yourself the cause of the results of your activities, and never be attached to not doing your duty.”
—Bhagavad Gita 2:47
The preface provides essential background information, explaining that the Bhagavad-gītā originally appeared as an episode within the Mahābhārata, an epic Sanskrit history of the ancient world. The story revolves around the conflict between the righteous Pandavas and the envious Kauravas, leading to a great war. Lord Kṛṣṇa, who is revered as the Supreme Godhead, imparts profound wisdom and guidance to the warrior Arjuna on the eve of the battle.
Unlike other translations that marginalize Kṛṣṇa, Prabhupāda's approach in Bhagavad-gītā As It Is stays true to the Gītā's essence, emphasizing Kṛṣṇa as the central figure and ultimate goal. By doing so, the translation and commentary offer a comprehensive and coherent understanding of the scripture, aligning with its inherent message.
In summary, Bhagavad-gītā As It Is is a highly regarded edition of the Bhagavad-gītā that combines accurate translation, religious insight, and an authentic portrayal of Kṛṣṇa's teachings. It is a timeless guide that has resonated with millions of readers worldwide, providing them with profound wisdom and a deeper understanding of life, spirituality, and the eternal truths conveyed in this ancient scripture.
This article follows the IAST (International Alphabet of Sanskrit Transliteration) system, which has been widely adopted as the academic standard since 1912. In accordance with this system, commonly used spellings like "Krishna" are rendered as "Kṛṣṇa."

As I write this newsletter, I want to be transparent and share that I’m still in the process of experimenting and learning. Last week, I faced a challenging technical glitch that tested my patience. Despite meticulously crafting my content and fine-tuning every sentence, I encountered a frustrating obstacle: my post exceeded the limits, causing a delay in its launch. Picture me staring at the clock, feeling the mounting pressure as time slipped away.
However, after some trial and error, I managed to overcome the glitch and finally launched the newsletter, albeit with a delay of around 40-45 minutes. Schwartz, and Farida Bamji for their support and encouragement, withoput which this issue would not have come out. I also take the opportunity to thank Lily Rose (aka Debbie Chutuk) and Dr. Haseena Chokkiyil for their support and encouragement in the previous issue of Celestial Love Letters. My apologies to them for having missed the opportunity to acknowledge their contributions last time.

Poetic License: Reflections and Renderings by Lawrence L. Schwartz
Today, I want to share my thoughts on a remarkable poetry collection, Poetic License: Reflections and Renderings by Lawrence L. Schwartz, or as I proudly call him, Larry. Larry kindly sent me a copy of his book for an honest review. So, let's dive into the world of Larry's poetic brilliance!
What struck me the most about Poetic License was Larry's universal outlook toward poetry. He has a unique way of bridging the gap between poetry enthusiasts and those who typically shy away from the genre. Larry once said, “I often say that my poetry is more for people who don't necessarily like poetry.” This sentiment immediately resonated with me, as I usually don't gravitate toward poetry books. But Larry's words proved to be a revelation, inviting me to explore his collection with an open mind and a renewed curiosity.
Larry's poems are deeply rooted in his personal experiences, often drawing inspiration from spiritual insights. Throughout the last couple of decades, he has crafted verses that reflect his exploration of Eastern metaphysical philosophy and interfaith concepts, all while celebrating our shared humanity. His profound understanding and incorporation of these ideas make his poetry rich with wisdom and contemplation.
As I delved into Poetic License, I found myself utterly captivated by the divine essence woven into each poem. Larry's words seem to echo from a higher realm, whispering insights that touch the very core of our existence. It's a testament to his ability to channel his spirituality and translate it into words that resonate with readers on a deeply profound level.
Larry's collection showcases his versatility as a poet. From concise, six-lined poems like “A Trick of Mind” to expansive and intricate pieces such as “Recollection,” he effortlessly navigates various forms and structures. This diversity keeps the reading experience engaging, as you never know what delightful surprises await you on the next page.
For those interested in getting their hands on Poetic License: Reflections and Renderings, it's readily available on Amazon, where you can find both the printed version and a Kindle edition. US-based readers can also order the printed book directly from IPBooks. So, there are plenty of options to choose from to embark on this poetic journey.
In conclusion, Poetic License: Reflections and Renderings is an exquisite collection that transcends the boundaries of traditional poetry. Larry's universal outlook, spiritual insights, and his ability to strike a chord with readers who might not typically explore poetry make this collection truly special. Each poem is a gateway to divine reflections and offers a profound connection with the beauty of the written word.
So, my dear friends, if you're ready to embark on a journey that will expand your horizons and touch your soul, I wholeheartedly recommend Poetic License: Reflections and Renderings by Lawrence L. Schwartz. Prepare to be inspired, enlightened, and moved by Larry's poetic genius.
Happy reading!

What hoopla was created??
Instead of saving your energy
Diverting one’s energy to
Bring about unity and harmony

Did you all get?

I certainly think not
If only one would
Concentrate on

As well Exclusion
At the same time
Saving our precious religion
